Buddy Valastro had the honor of featuring in a new video by YouTube star James Charles yesterday — who brought up his now famous arrest. But what happened?
The incident happened in 2014, right when Buddy was at the top of his game with his hit show on TLC, Cake Boss.
He was arrested for a DWI, which is when a person is believed to have been driving while intoxicated, either through alcohol or drugs. In some states, a DWI refers to alcohol, while a DUI is commonly used for drugs, such as narcotics or prescription drugs.
‘You can’t arrest me, I’m the Cake Boss!’
When Valastro was arrested, he reportedly told the police that he had a couple of drinks, before coming out with the now famous line, “You can’t arrest me, I’m the Cake Boss!” He also reportedly told them repeatedly that he was a “good guy” and asked if they could just put him in a cab.
The arrest took place at 1 a.m. on a Thursday in November, 2014, in New York City after he reportedly failed a field sobriety test. The famous bakery from Cake Boss, Carlo’s Bakery, is located in New Jersey.
At the time, he released a statement to ABC News, revealing that he wanted privacy to deal with the arrest.
“To all my family, friends, fans and supporters, please know that I want to share and explain to you what happened today and I look forward to doing so at a later date. I appreciate your support and understanding as we handle things privately as a family.”
Valastro pleaded guilty to the DWI, and publicly apologized for his behavior. His license was suspended for 90 days and he paid a $300 fine for his violation.
Buddy would later open up about his arrest on Extra in an interview with Mario Lopez, revealing that he thought he was fine to drive at the time — but that it would never happen again.
Cake Boss ran for 9 seasons on TLC, starting in 2009 and running until 2016. A single episode was aired in 2017, looking back at the life of Momma Mary.
Buddy has also starred in Kitchen Boss, The Next Great Baker and Buddy’s Bakery Rescue. His show Bake It Like Buddy is currently airing on Discovery Family, and he has a YouTube channel called Cakehouse.
He also has a new show coming up on Food Network — Buddy vs. Duff — which will see him face off in a baking battle against Duff Goldman.
Bake It Like Buddy airs Saturdays at 9/8c on Discovery Family. Buddy vs. Duff premieres Sunday, March 10, on Food Network.
