The Hunchback of Notre Dame is joining the lineup of many classic Disney movies that are getting a live-action makeover. Disney has already started development on this new project and David Henry Hwang will be writing the script.
Mandeville Films and Josh Gad are set to produce the movie, while noteworthy composers Alan Menken and Stephen Schwartz will be behind the music. Little else is known about the project, which could be in production for a few years.
While Disney’s animated version of The Hunchback of Notre Dame was a hit in Disney’s classic movie lineup, the story itself has gone through various adaptations, including for the stage.
The animated movie, which focused on the bell-ringer at Notre Dame and the feisty gypsy by the name of Esmeralda, earned $325 million at the box office world wide.
It only makes sense that Disney is remaking this movie. The Hunchback of Notre Dame will follow some of Disney’s classic animations that have been turned into live action movies, such as The Lion King, Aladdin, Beauty and the Beast, The Jungle Book, Cinderella, and Alice In Wonderland.
We have previously made a list of Disney’s live-action movies and what we can expect. This year alone, Disney is releasing Dumbo in March, Aladdin in May, and The Lion King in July.
Disney has announced that Mulan, The Little Mermaid, and Snow White are possible projects we will see soon.
At present time, Hwang will write the script and once that is complete, casting will begin. In other words, we don’t know anything about the possible stars of the movie but don’t be surprised if we see some fresh faces as the main characters.
