The Grammy nominations were just recently announced, with three newcomers leading the way.
It’s not going to be a Beyonce, Taylor Swift, or Ariana Grande show. Grammys 2020 nominees Lizzo, Lil Nas X, and Billie Eilish have a combined 20 nominations between them. However, just one of those stars tops all nominees with the most Grammy nominations this year.
Lil Nas X, Billie Eilish land Grammy nods for smash hits
All three contenders had smash hits over the year. Most people have heard Lil Nas X’s Old Town Road by now, as the crossover hit spawned a remix version featuring Billie Ray Cyrus. Thanks to the popularity of the track, Lil Nas X is up for six nominations at the 2020 Grammys.
On his Instagram, the rapper showed off his nominations for the 2020 awards ceremony. They include Record of the Year, Song of the Year, Best New Artist, and Best Music Video. He’s also up for Album of the Year for his EP 7.

The same is true for 17-year-old Billie Eilish, as it was her song Bad Guy which ultimately overtook Old Town Road. Nas X’s hit remained at the top of the charts for an impressive 19 weeks, but Eilish played the Bad Guy, so to speak, and knocked him off to claim No 1 overall.
Her song also achieved No. 1 in multiple countries beyond the United States Billboard Hot 100. That included landing atop musical charts in Canada, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Norway, Russia, and Slovakia, among others. The accompanying music video has racked up over 650 million views on YouTube, as of this report.
The singer posted a montage clip with the announcements of the various Grammy categories she’s nominated in. That includes both the Song and Record of the Year nominations revealed on Wednesday.
Truth Hurts for 2020 Grammy nominees
Nas X’s Old Town Road and Billie Eilish’s Bad Guy were certainly smash hits and worthy of nominations. However, the song Truth Hurts was also a huge breakout hit and because of it, Lizzo received the most Grammy nominations this year.
The singer leads all contenders with eight total nominations heading to the awards show. Just like Nas X and Eilish, Lizzo finds herself amongst the nominees for Record of the Year, Album of the Year, and Song of the Year categories.
Truth Hurts was considered a “viral sleeper hit” this past year with the TikTok video-sharing app helping the song gain traction. The music video on YouTube has now achieved over 151 million views. Lizzo’s extremely popular song was able to reach No. 1 on multiple U.S. Billboard Charts including the Hot 100, Top 40, and Rhythmic charts.
The singer posted “Thank You” to her Instagram account for her nominations which will also include Best New Artist and Best Urban Contemporary Album. Of note, the singer has several other songs nominated beyond Truth Hurts including Jerome and Exactly How I Feel featuring Gucci Mane.
The Grammy nominees are selected based on music from artists in the eligibility period of October 1, 2018, through August 31, 2019. Now the three top contenders will battle it out to see if one will take home the most hardware, or if a tie will take place. Will it be Lizzo, Lil Nas X, or Billie Eilish winning the 2020 show?
