Rick Lagina finds an artifact that supports one of late treasure-hunter Fred Nolan’s theories on the next episode of The Curse of Oak Island — in the swamp!
Fans have been waiting all season to see Rick Lagina don his waders and head into the island’s triangular-shaped area of marshland, after photos released before the season started showed he goes in there this season.
The moment comes on next week’s episode and newly released footage shows him standing knee-deep in mud while brother Marty describes whatever Rick has found as looking “exactly right”.
The episode, titled Unhinged, also sees the team discover hinges on what is thought to be Lot 12 — one of the lots owned by the Nolan family, which they were given access to by Fred’s son Tom Nolan on the latest episode. In the newly released trailer, below, it’s speculated that the hinges could be part of a missing chest.
In the sneak peek at the end of the latest episode, metal-detecting expert Gary Drayton said of the find: “These are the types of hinges that come off chests or boxes.”
The new trailer also shows the caisson known as DMT — named after Drake Tester, who tragically passed away last year — hitting something “very, very solid” and described as “not something normal”.
The sneak peek at the end of the latest episode showed problems with the oscillator at the site as the team try to push the caisson into the ground, with oil spilling out from part of the machinery.
The episode description for next week also reveals that more information comes to light about the mysterious lead cross the team found at the island’s Smith’s Cove earlier in the season, which could provide a different theory about its origins. Footage at the end of the latest episode saw the cross being described as the “find of the century”.
A big clue that more interesting discoveries could be about to be made away from the Money Pit area came in the voiceover as the latest episode closed. It said: “For Rick, Marty and the Oak Island team, digging the DMT shaft in the Money Pit area may be their final test in solving the 223 year old mystery.
“Will they soon find where a vast treasure lies buried, a treasure consisting from everything from valuable objects to priceless documents? Treasure of historic importance brought to Oak Island centuries ago and from thousands of miles away?
“Or might they find that the keys to unlocking Oak Island’s secrets lie somewhere much closer to the surface and in a different and more ingeniously protected location than anyone ever knew?”
The full description for next week’s Season 5 Episode 13 reads: “The plot thickens around the discovery of the lead cross as a new theory points to possible ancient origins, while Rick pulls an artifact from the swamp that may support one of Fred Nolan’s theories.”
