It is that time of year as Discovery and Expedition Unknown host Josh Gates reflect on their storied travels while examining the year that was — and the impact and production challenges the show’s episodes had on them personally.
Our teaser clip is from a special premiere this Wednesday called Amazing Adventures. It sees Josh and his cameraman Evan B. Stone curate the best Expedition Unknown moments, heart-stopping events and strange situations they found themselves in over the course of the series production.
The clip explores the so-called Mahogany ship, the lore of which goes back to 1836. On Australia’s shipwreck coast, the southwestern Victoria coastline, it is estimated that at least 700 ships were wrecked and it is believed that less than one-third of them were ever found again.
This is where seal hunters reportedly found the Mahogany ship, after stumbling across the hull of a vessel trapped in the sand dunes.
Josh talks about how the seal hunters’ description suggests the wreck is centuries old, and hundreds of years older than the first ships known to have explored Australia. Josh says the Mahogany ship could rewrite maritime history if found again.
And so we revisit this roiling Australian coast, where Josh and Evan recall the salty sea-sprayed adventure of a lifetime. Aussie guide Ross Poulter is also featured in the look back (the original air date of this episode was June 26, 2018, on Discovery). He was employed by the Expedition Unknown production team to find the centuries-old wreck now believed to be buried in the shallows of the surf.
Josh and Evan delight in recalling the onerous task of filming this particular episode, in which the waves and currents really tested their core strength and their commitment to the story being told.
Evan recalls being battered by ten feet of white water rushing over their heads and the force of the waves knocking them down. Josh says “I was getting the snot kicked out of me.” And we bear witness to this fact — they both really were getting knocked about!
Miraculously (and luckily for Evan and Josh) in a very short time Ross got a ping on his metal detector in this rough coastal surf. He tells Josh, who digs with his hands in the silt and finds something. He hands over a spike to Ross and Evan who are beyond excited as he says: “A piece of a wreck!”
