Lucifer is returning for Season 4 and fans are rejoicing!
Lucifer had been on Fox for only three seasons before the network canceled it in May 2018. After Fox announced the cancellation, Warner Bros. began searching for a new home for the series.
Meanwhile, devastated fans took to social media to raise a huge clamor under the hashtags #SaveLucifer and #PickUpLucifer in hopes that another network or streaming platform would pick up Lucifer for Season 4.
The #SaveLucifer campaign snowballed rapidly on Twitter and within 24 hours more than one million tweets were posted in support of Lucifer.
Finally on June 15, about four weeks after the Fox cancellation in May, Netflix stepped up to the plate and announced that the streaming platform was picking up Lucifer for Season 4.
It was the series lead actor, Tom Ellis, who broke the good news. He took to Twitter on June 15 to confirm that Netflix had ordered Lucifer Season 4 for its streaming platform.
The announcement sparked wild jubilation among fans on social media. The Lucifer cast, led by Ellis, joined in the celebration of the resurrection of Lucifer on Netflix, and shared their overflowing joy with fans.
With Lucifer having found a new home on Netflix, impatient fans are asking when Lucifer Season 4 will premiere on the streaming platform and what to expect of the upcoming season.
And thankfully, the cast and crew of the show have been teasing snippets of information on social media since production of Lucifer Season 4 began last summer.
While fans impatiently await the return of the revived series to Netflix, we bring you all that is known about Lucifer Season 4, including release date, teasers, trailers, cast, plot, and latest news update.
Lucifer Season 4 release date
The showrunners have not announced an official date when Lucifer Season 4 will premiere on Netflix.
There was jubilation when Netflix confirmed the series for Season 4 on the streaming platform, but even while fans and the cast rejoiced everyone realized there was still a long wait ahead before Lucifer Season 4 premieres on Netflix.
After showrunners Joe Henderson and Ildy Modrovich told TVLine that Lucifer Season 4 would go into production in August 2018, fans gave up hopes that the new season would premiere in 2018 and instead set their hopes on the first quarter of 2019.
Since production began on August 13, the cast and the writers’ room have been sharing information with fans on social media. The writers’ room shared that the upcoming season will consist of 10 episodes, all of which Netflix will drop at the same time.
Lucifer fans will recall that Lucifer Season 1 had 13 episodes, while Season 2 had 18. Lucifer Season 3 had 24 episodes, excluding two bonus episodes (Boo Normal and Once Upon A Time) that aired on Fox after Season 3’s official finale.
Although some fans had hoped that the reduced number of episodes for Lucifer Season 4 on Netflix will translate into an earlier release date, it seems unlikely that it would.
The writers’ room has also dropped the titles for all the 10 episodes of Lucifer Season 4 (scroll down for list of episodes).
Lucifer Season 4 details
Lucifer is a fantasy police procedural comedy-drama series based on a DC Comics character from the comic book series The Sandman. The character, created by Neil Gaiman, Sam Kieth, and Mike Dringenberg, later got a spin-off series of his own under DC Comic’s Vertigo imprint.
The TV series, which stars Tom Ellis, Lauren German, Kevin Alejandro, and Lesley-Ann Brandt, was developed by Tom Kapinos.
Lucifer premiered on Fox on January 25, 2016.
The storyline follows Lucifer Morningstar (Tom Ellis), the Devil himself, who comes to Los Angeles after getting bored with life in hell.
Lucifer is unhappy with the monotony of life in Hell, so he abandons his throne in the Kingdom of Hell and relocates to L.A. where he starts a nightclub called Lux.
He soon becomes involved in a murder case, and after helping Detective Chloe Decker to solve the case, the LAPD invites him to serve as their consultant.
Lucifer at first received mixed reviews when it premiered on Fox, but the critical response improved during the second and third seasons.
However, the initially high viewing figures for the show dwindled and the ratings remained low until Fox canceled the series on May 11 before Season 3 ended on May 28.
Fox’s cancellation of the series sparked a short but intense social media campaign by fans under the hashtags #SaveLucifer and #PickUpLucifer. Fans campaigned enthusiastically, hoping that they could convince another network or streaming service to pick up the series.
SaveLucifer quickly emerged as #1 trending topic on Twitter and the second hashtag #PickUpLucifer also began trending within days. Fans also started an online petition to find a new home for Lucifer.
Warner Bros. immediate began searching for a new home for Lucifer and on June 15, Netflix picked up the show for Season 4.
Netflix apparently decided to save Lucifer because while the show wasn’t doing very well in the U.S., it was doing much better outside the country.
Ellis confirmed that Netflix’s decision to renew Lucifer for Season 4 was informed by the show’s appeal to audiences outside the U.S. Since Netflix offers content to audiences around the world.
The streaming platform is always looking for shows that may not appeal to U.S. viewers but appeal to a broader international audience.
Members of the Lucifer cast celebrated on social media when news broke that Netflix had saved the series. They took to Twitter and Instagram to rejoice and thank fans for launching an enthusiastic social media campaign that came to the attention of the decision-makers at Netflix.
Ellis in particular admitted that he was downcast for a couple of days after Fox announced the decision to let the show go, but he was encouraged by the outpouring of love and support from fans, and he quickly got behind the #SaveLucifer/#PickUpLucifer campaign.
Other members of the Lucifer cast who also shared their joy on social media and showed their appreciation to fans included Lauren German (Detective Chloe Decker), Kevin Alejandro (Detective Dan Espinoza), Aimee Garcia (Ella Lopez), Lesley-Ann Brandt (Mazikeen), D.B. Woodside (Amenadiel) and Tricia Helfer, whose character, Charlotte, died in Season 3.
Co-showrunners Joe Henderson and Ildy Modrovich revealed soon after Netflix ordered Lucifer Season 4 that the new season would go into production in August 2018, and that production would wrap up in December.
The showrunners also revealed that Season 4 will have only 10 episodes.
Filming eventually started on August 13, 2018, in California, where Season 3 was also shot. Lucifer Season 1 and Season 2 had been shot in Vancouver, Canada, but the pilot was shot on location in Los Angeles.
In August, the writers’ room began sharing information with fans about the episodes of the upcoming season. The titles for all the 10 episodes of the new season have been revealed through the Lucifer writers’ Twitter feed.
When the Lucifer writer’s room Twitter feed shared on August 7 that the title of the first episode of Lucifer Season 4, written by Henderson and directed by Shervin Shilati, would be Everything’s Ok, fans assumed that the words were taken from the episode’s dialogue and began speculating about who would say the words to whom and why.

Episode 7: Devil Is As Devil Does (Jen Graham Imada, directed by Richard Speight, Jr).
Episode 8: Super Bad Boyfriend (Jason Ning, directed by Claudia Yarmy).
Episode 9: Save Lucifer (Joe Henderson, directed by Lisa Demaine).

It is expected that Lucifer Season 4 will pick up from the Season 3 finale cliffhanger, in which Chloe Decker (Lauren German) finally saw Lucifer’s true Devil face.
Lucifer showed his true Devil face as he killed Lieutenant Marcus Pierce/Cain (Tom Welling).
Season 4 will reveal Chloe’s reaction and probably Lucifer’s effort to reassure her after she discovered that he was actually the Devil.
In one of the bonus episodes that aired on Fox after Season 3, we see Chloe still working with Lucifer as if she had come to terms with the fact that he was the Devil. But it was not certain whether the revelation made her to withdraw from entering into a romantic relationship with Lucifer.
Lucifer Season 4 cast
The showrunners have not announced the official casting for Lucifer Season 4, but the duo of Tom Ellis, as Lucifer Morningstar, and Lauren German, as Detective Chloe Decker, is expected to return.
Judging from the cast members who appeared in the behind-the-scenes video announcing that Season 4 had started officially filming on August 13, we can safely conclude that besides Tom Ellis and Lauren German, Rachael Harris, Aimee Garcia, Kevin Alejandro, and Lesley-Ann Brandt, are returning for Lucifer Season 4.
That means that fans can expected the return of Kevin Aledjandro as Detective Daniel “Dan” Espinoza, Aimee Garcia as Ella Lopez, Lesley-Ann Brandt as Mazikeen, and Rachel Harris as Dr. Linda Martin.
Others cast members expected to return include, Scarlett Estevez as Beatrice “Trixie” Espinoza and D.B. Woodside as Amenadiel.
Woodside had posted a video to his Twitter account in August which confirmed he was returning as the Devil’s big brother, Amenadiel, for Lucifer Season 4.
Amenadiel came to Earth to convince his little brother to return to his throne in Hell after he abdicated and relocated to Los Angeles.
TV Insider reported in August that Lucifer was casting Imposters star Inbar Levi as Eve, the first woman, and a former love interest of Lucifer.
An official character bio released described Eve as the “original sinner herself” who had “grown restless [after an eternity with Adam] and longs for a less predictable time when things were exciting. Naughty. Dangerous.”
Eve, according to the description, is missing Lucifer “her hot and heavy first love… the charming rogue who tempted her so many years ago.”
The Israeli actress Lavi is known for having played the con artist Maddie Johnson in the Imposters (TV series 2017-2018). She comes to her new role as Eve after Bravo canceled Imposter in June. Bravo canceled Imposter after only two seasons.
Lavi also played Sheba in Prison Break (TV series 2005-2017) and Veronica “Vee” Dotsen in Fox’s Gang Related (TV series 2014). She played Lt. Ravit Bivas in The Last Ship (TV Series 2014-2018), and Raviva in MTV’s Underemployed (TV Miniseries 2012).
Actress Vinessa Vidotto is also reportedly joining the cast of Lucifer for Season 4. She will play Remiel, Amenadiel’s “little sister,” and presumably Lucifer’s sister too.
According to an official description, Remiel looks up to her big brother Amenadiel, but “also feels under-appreciated or overshadowed while struggling to match his towering standards.”
Lucifer Season 4 will also feature Scottish actor Graham McTavish as Father Kinley, who apparently challenges Lucifer to a duel.
Lucifer Season 4 plot: What fans can expect
While fans look forward to the premiere of Lucifer Season 4 on Netflix, members of the cast and producers have been generously sharing information about what to expect of the upcoming season.
After a Reddit user shared a notice he received from Warner Bros. alerting his neighborhood that there would be explosions on a “jungle set” close to the neighborhood, fans began speculating that the storyline for the upcoming season could include an adaptation of the Garden of Eden story from the Bible.
After production started in August, the Lucifer writers’ room began using its Twitter feed to update fans on the titles of the episodes for Season 4 and revealed that the first episode, written by Henderson and directed by Sherwin Shilati, would be Everything’s Ok.
Many fans assumed that the title could be a snippet of dialogue from the episode and began speculating about who said the words and to whom.
Fans will recall that in Season 3, Lucifer saved Chloe when Lieutenant Marcus Pierce/Cain’s (Tom Welling) henchmen tried to kill her. Lucifer used his wings to shield Chloe from the bullets. He then took off in the air and flew with Chloe to a rooftop.
Lucifer later confronted Cain, and as he killed Cain, his true Devil’s face emerged. Chloe saw his true nature for the first time and learned the shocking truth that Lucifer Morningstar is the Devil.
Fans will find out in Lucifer Season 4 what happens after Chloe discovers the Lux owner’s true identity.
How will Chloe and Lucifer’s relationship pan out after the shocking discovery? Now that Chloe knows that Lucifer Morningstar is the Fallen One, will Lucifer be able to reassure her that Everything’s Ok?
Co-showrunner Henderson also told Deadline in May, before Netflix announced the decision to pick up Lucifer for Season 4, that the ramifications of Chloe’s discovery, including how it affects her relationship with Lucifer, will be the focus of Season 4.
“So that was the big thrust of season 4–exploring Chloe dealing with those ramifications, and how it affected her relationship with Lucifer,” Hendersen said. “Both professionally and personally. Can you work with the Devil? Can you love the devil?”
“This is the end of an act, and the beginning of the next one is Chloe knowing the truth and having to deal with both the fact that her partner was actually the Devil, but also the man she has grown to love,” Hendersen told TV Line. “That’s what we wanted to explore in season four.”
The showrunners also revealed in May that they were introducing a new character in Season 4.
“We also had an exciting character from Lucifer’s past who was going to come in and mix everything up,” Modrovich told Deadline. “A very personal, intimate figure who we won’t reveal the identity of yet… until we find out if we get the chance to tell the tale on a new network.”
They later revealed that the mysterious character is Eve, the first woman and “original sinner.”
Ellis had told Entertainment Weekly at SDCC last summer that he did not see romance blossoming between Chloe and Lucifer too soon after her discovery because their relationship is the “heartbeat of the show,” thus getting them together too soon would lead to a premature resolution of the storyline.
If Ellis’s comments reflect the thought among the writers, it means that Eve’s return will put a strain on Chloe’s relationship with Lucifer and at least delay their getting together.
The relationship is already under strain due to Chloe’s discovery. Chloe will now realize she can’t trust anyone and this could cause a temporary rift between her and Lucifer.
News emerged in August that Israeli actress Inbar Levi had been cast in the series and that she will play Eve, “the original sinner herself,” who has grown restless and bored in her marriage to Adam and longs to be back again with Lucifer.
Evil will set about the task of seducing Lucifer who will likely succumb her wiles.
“Lucifer is in a very vulnerable moment, emotionally — not that he would ever recognize that — when out of nowhere, Eve turns up,” Ellis told TVLine.
“[Eve] brings back so much for Lucifer, about the man he used to be — or, the Devil he used to be,” Ellis continued. “She’s never forgotten about him. And she loves him.”
“Inbar plays Eve so uniquely, and well…. She just brings a whole new vibe to the show,” Lauren German, who players Chloe, added. “She has this ethereal and light and sensual energy.”
Lucifer Season 4 is also expected to feature a face-off between a priest portrayed by The Outlander star Graham McTavish. The Scottish actor’s character will likely challenge Lucifer based on his religious conspiracy theory about him.
TVLine reported in August that the Scottish actor has been cast as Father Kinley who is determined to protect his flock from the Evil One after discovering that Los Angeles is the city where the devil is living.
Fans are expecting that McTavish, who is known for physically intensive portrayals, will get into a physical confrontation with the Devil over lost souls.
We also know that Vinessa Vidotto will guest star as Amenadiel’s little sister Remiel, but we don’t know yet why Remiel is visiting and how her visit relates to Lucifer Morningstar.
Fans can also expect that now that the Devil has a new home in Netflix there will be even more graphic language, violence and nudity than before.
Ellis posted a photo to Instagram last August in which he showed off his six-pack abs after working out in the gym for three months. Fans believe that the Devil actor is beefing up in anticipation of more nude scenes now that Lucifer has found a more permissive home in Netflix.
With the show having moved to Netflix, showrunners will not pass up any opportunity to show off the Devil’s physique in Season 4.
The cast and crew filmed the last episode of the Season 4 in December and fans are excitedly looking forward to the announcement of the premiere date, hopefully, in the first quarter of 2019.
