History will tonight air a special episode of The Curse of Oak Island focusing on Templar links to the island — followed by a sneak peek of the next episode in Season 5.

The discovery by metal-detecting expert Gary Drayton of a medieval cross at the island’s Smith’s Cove has prompted renewed speculation that members of the Knights Templar may have visited the island in the past.

The special episode will look at the history of the mysterious order, and all the clues that the Oak Island team have found that connect to them so far.

The special episode will be followed by a nine-minute sneak peek at the next episode in Season 5, which will air next week and is titled ‘Steel Trapped’. The special will air at 9/8c with the first look at next week’s episode immediately afterwards at 10.03/9.03c.

The description for tonight’s special, titled The Templar Connection, reads: “The discovery of the mysterious lead cross raised new questions about a Knights Templar connection. Tonight, we take a look at Templar history and the compelling Templar clues the team has found so far.”

Why is there no new episode of The Curse of Oak Island tonight?

Season 5 of The Curse of Oak Island is taking a one-week break due to the Olympics. The season will return with Episode 514 next week on February 20, with Episode 515 on February 27 and the finale, episode 516, on March 6.

That will be followed by the premiere of History’s all-new show The Curse of Civil War Gold, which will follow a hunt for $2million of Confederate gold bullion believed to be at the bottom of Lake Michigan.

What happens in next week’s new Season 5 episode?

A sneak peek at the end of the latest episode showed that the team send a camera down the DMT shaft at the Money Pit area during the next episode, in a bid to try and find out what is obstructing their drilling efforts.

Last episode saw many of the teeth on their 60in caisson break off under ground after hitting the object.

The sneak peek showed the team lowering a camera down into the DMT shaft. However, footage also showed water appearing to flood into it as Rick Lagina looked on in despair.

We also saw a decorative keyhole being discovered by Gary Drayton, and a theory being presented that the medieval cross could have been used to smuggle gold.

A new trailer, below, shows further footage of the discovery of the keyhole, and more discussion about the obstruction. Cameras then capture the moment the team lower the camera down the DMT shaft, before team member Alex Lagina says while looking at a screen: “See there’s water coming in right there?”

The shaft is then shown apparently flooding with water as the team rush to pull up the camera.

The description for next week’s new Season 5 episode reads: “It’s all hands on deck in the Money Pit as the team hits something in the DMT shaft that may prove to be the last thing standing between it and the answers below.

“Meanwhile, Gary Drayton strikes again when he zeros in on a find that could be a key piece of a missing treasure chest.”

The Curse of Oak Island airs Tuesdays at 9/8c on History.
