Maci Bookout has been open about her PCOS throughout her journey on Teen Mom OG. This has been something she is passionate about and moving forward, she will be doing a lot more with it.
There have been a lot of questions surrounding what PCOS is and how Maci Bookout has been dealing with it. She came under a lot of criticism after she fell pregnant nearly back to back with Maverick and Jayde.
Unfortunately, Teen Mom OG fans were cruel about her pregnancies, even insinuating that perhaps Bookout knew she was pregnant with the babies while she was drinking.
What is PCOS?
PCOS is polycystic ovary syndrome. It is a reproductive disorder that affects five to 10 percent of women in the age group of 15 to 44. Essentially, this happens during your childbearing years.
What happens is that women’s bodies produce cysts and generally, once ovulation occurs, they disappear and resolve on their own. With PCOS, the cysts continue to grow and grow until eventually, they erupt, which can cause quite a bit of pain.
Also, PCOS can cause irregular or missed menstrual cycles altogether. It can hinder a woman’s ability to get pregnant. There is currently no cure for it, but doctors can help women who are affected by PCOS lead as normal of a life as possible.
Maci Bookout’s advocacy
On last night’s Teen Mom OG, Maci Bookout revealed she was asked to take part in the PCOS advocacy day. Back in May, she gave a speech and joined the crusade to get the condition more attention.
With more knowledge of the problem that plagues so many women, hopefully, they can get the help they need and resources to deal with the issues they are experiencing.
Aside from being asked to be a celebrity face for the disease, Maci Bookout was honored with the Ricardo Azziz PCOS Challenge Advocacy Leadership Award. She received the award and was able to give a speech in front of a large crowd.
There is still a lot of work and research that needs to happen with PCOS, but with Maci Bookout helping and lending her celebrity status, things are getting done. She has been incredibly upfront about living with this condition and it has been a huge part of her storyline on Teen Mom OG.
Teen Mom OG airs Monday nights at 9/8c on MTV.
