Deadliest Catch: Dungeon Cove premieres tonight, with the first episode following four families as they take part in the famous crab derby.
The new reality series takes the fishing action south from Alaska down to Newport, Oregon – but the sea is no less dangerous.
There — in one of the deadliest fishing grounds in the world, dubbed the Graveyard of the Pacific — crab fishermen and their families have fought against the elements to make a living.
The sea might be abundant with fish and crab but it exacts a heavy price for this bounty.
Over the years hundreds of boats and thousands of lives have been lost in these volatile and tricky waters.
As in other shows like Wicked Tuna: Outer Banks, the big danger is when the boats head across the bars — where the waves rear up and can land unlucky or unprepared boats in a lot of trouble.
Every season the boats set off to make the best of the Dungeness crab season as they take part in one of the few fishing derbies left anywhere.
The first boat to land their catch can make a small fortune but the risks are high and the competition is fierce.
But that danger and competitiveness also breeds a tight community spirit, with generations of fisherman and their families having close bonds both to each other and the area.
The show follows the exploits on the unforgiving sea but also back at home where the families get on with normal life.
