It has been confirmed, Ewan McGregor will once again take on the mantle of the Jedi master Obi-Wan Kenobi. Yesterday we got the rumors and today they have been confirmed by Variety.
Previously, an Obi Wan Kenobi feature film was in the works but due to the lackluster performance of Solo: A Star Wars Story, that and other projects were put on hold. While this project won’t be a feature film, it will instead be a series on the upcoming Disney+ digital streaming service.
This will be the third Star Wars live-action series that will be on Disney+. It will join The Mandalorian starring Pedro Pascal and created by Jon Favreau. There’s also a Rogue One prequel with Diego Luna reprising his role as Cassian Andor along with Stephen Schiff serving as showrunner.
There are more and more reasons to get a Disney+ subscription now with multiple Star Wars-related projects, Marvel titles, and more. We do expect there will be multiple big announcements set to be made during D23 Expo 2019 next weekend in Anaheim.
At the moment, beyond McGregor signing onto this project from Lucasfilm, we don’t have many details when it comes to the story side of things. Many fans though are speculating that it will revolve around Kenobi’s days as a hermit on Tatooine while Luke Skywalker grows up with his uncle and aunt.
Others are hoping to instead see either an untold story of Kenobi as a general during the Clone Wars or one last mission The Dirty Dozen style mission before he becomes known as a crazy old man on Tatooine.
Will you be getting a Disney+ subscription when it becomes available? What do you think of McGregor returning as Obi-Wan Kenobi? And what kind of story are you hoping that will end up telling?
Disney Plus launches in the U.S. on November 12.
