Fans want to know if Season 9 is the last season of The Walking Dead. It’s a good question. If it’s up to AMC, there will likely be many more seasons of the hit show. But there are certainly some possible roadblocks from that happening.

The Walking Dead ratings from the Season 9 premiere were not good. It was reported that the program lost half of its audience from the prior season.

There could be a number of reasons this happened, though, including AMC allowing some of its viewers to see the episode ahead of time. This could make the numbers from the upcoming episode quite important.

Is Season 9 the last season of The Walking Dead on AMC?

The question about the future of the show keeps coming up due to Andrew Lincoln and Lauren Cohan leaving the show. TWD fans paying close attention to entertainment news already know that the characters of Rick Grimes and Maggie Greene may be appearing in their final episodes.

There are a lot of rumors about the death of Rick Grimes. There are also rumors about how production and the writers may have Maggie’s character live on in some fashion. It’s possible that there is hope for Cohan to return to the show at a later date, even though her current contract has come to an end.

At present, rumors of The Walking Dead getting canceled are presumptuous. The show is simply too popular for AMC to end it, especially with possible cross-promotion also existant with Fear the Walking Dead.

Will there be a Walking Dead Season 10?

It seems quite clear that the producers and writers are keen to move on, even after Rick and Maggie have had their final episodes shown. The emergence of new characters will be needed, with an expectation that Daryl (played by Norman Reedus) and Carol (played by Melissa McBride) will take on even bigger roles. Michonne (played by Danai Gurira) is also going to be around.

In the current season, Daryl has already started taking on a leadership role. Rick has placed him in charge of the Saviors, allowing him to evolve as a character on the show.

While he has not been very comfortable with that job, it is certainly beginning to foreshadow what might come up in the next few episodes.

The Walking Dead won’t get canceled

Even with lower ratings, The Walking Dead is a huge draw for AMC. The program has been one of the highest-rated on television, so even losing some viewers won’t damage it that much.

It’s also possible, that with the final episodes of Rick and Maggie coming up, that more people tune in to see how those story arcs come to a close.

So, is Season 9 the last season of The Walking Dead on AMC? Fans shouldn’t worry too much, as it appears the answer to the question is that the show could stick around for many more years to come. After all, Negan is still there and viewers don’t know what to make of that rogue helicopter. Yet.

The Walking Dead airs Sunday night at 9/8c on AMC.
