Making A Murderer 2 is still relatively new on Netflix, but people are already talking about a possible third season. The second season was added to Netflix on October 19, 2018, and fans have been talking about Steven Avery’s murder case and Brendan Dassey’s fight against the Wisconsin legal system once again.
As of right now, Netflix hasn’t confirmed the third season. However, that doesn’t mean it won’t happen.
Making A Murderer 2 wasn’t announced until two years after the first season was added to Netflix, and it would take another year for the episodes to be uploaded. In November 2017, the second season was confirmed but with few details. The first season premiered on December 18, 2015.
It’s important to remember that Making A Murderer follows a case that is happening in real time. The first season was filmed over the course of 10 years, as revealed during the first season. It told the story of Avery and Dassey, who were both found guilty of murdering Teresa Halbach in March 2007. She was killed in 2005.
As the second season came to an end, Kathleen Zellner revealed that she was going to keep pushing to prove that he was indeed innocent of the crime. Avery’s story is clearly not over and Kathleen wants to prove that Ken Kratz, the former district attorney of Calumet County, Wisconsin, set up Avery and Dassey.
In an interview with Cosmopolitan UK, filmmakers behind the docu-series, Moira Demos and Laura Ricciardi, revealed they would be open to doing a third season of the show.
“Maybe [there could be a third season]… I heard that documentaries come in tens,” Demos revealed in the interview, adding, “It’s hard to imagine what a true end to a story with so many threads and so many people who have gone through so much, would look like. We certainly have deep connections to many people in this story.”
Thanks to the docu-series on Netflix, a petition was started on Change.org three years ago, asking that Avery is pardoned. At the time, the petition got over 500,000 signatures.
Given the previous pattern of the first two seasons, if they make a third season of Making A Murderer, it wouldn’t be released until fall 2021. We are hoping it will be sooner!
