The first season of Mayans M.C. is in the books and it was a great way to tell the story of the motorcycle club located in the fictional Santo Padre border town. Directed by Elgin James, the Season 1 finale of Mayans M.C. titled Cuervo/Tz’ikb’uul delivered arguably the most shocking twist of the entire season at the end of the final act.
The finale episode begins as EZ is riding down a stretch of highway and in a beautiful shot. We see the reverse situation of the premiere episode opening scene. Three crows are eating a deceased dog on the roadside. This dog is the same one from the premiere episode Perro/Oc’s opening shot.
Miguel has left his brother’s medical records on the dining room table for Dita to see. Miguel forgives his mother for her dishonesty.
When she asks where Devante is, he says they must move on. Dita breaks down in tears either out of fear of whom her son has become or because she had feelings for Devante or mixture of both.
Gilly, Coco, and Angel leave the casino to find that EZ has already gone. Angel rides past the same dog carcass, but this time only one crow is picking at its flesh.
EZ arrives at the butcher shop to help Felipe open up the shop. Felipe remarks on EZ’s new Chikchan tattoo. EZ tells Felipe the favor Potter asked of him and Angel which is to kill Kevin Jimenez.
Felipe says, “Your cousin did or said something and got them scared in the last thing that they need is a whistle-blower now the DOJ is in bed with the cartel.”
EZ comments that he can’t make Angel do the deed because he is responsible for Angel’s involvement. Felipe requests EZ to promise not to do anything until he hears from him first.
EZ arrives at the clubhouse where the M.C. is preparing for a party and asking his father to hook them up with meats. They give EZ the keys to the van and Alvarez requests EZ to retrieve his travel bag. EZ leaves as Angel, Coco, and Gilly return to the yard.
Right after Chucky says he likes Johnny ‘Coco’ Cruz, the scene cuts to Lincoln Potter’s boardroom as the photo of Coco is being removed from the Mayans M.C.’s side of the “plan” whiteboard. Bowen questions one of Potter’s agents on why he can’t gain access to the Reyes file nor the files on Kevin Jimenez.
In the Temple, Alvarez gives his approval towards the cartel and rebel deal saying it’ll be good for the Mayans. Bishop explains the cartel has connections to acquire weapons that the Feds know about, but the Mayans will use their partnership with SAMCRO to supply additional firepower under the radar.
Alvarez remarks he’s keeping his promise to Jax Teller by keeping the peace with the Charming, CA Redwood Originals. The vote on running guns is unanimous after which, Alvarez mentions that Redwood is on the way already.
Kevin is packing his bags to head towards San Joaquin when he gets a phone call from Felipe urgently asking him to meet. Kevin shows up to Felipe’s butcher shop. As they talk in the cooler, Felipe grasps a gun on a crate next to him, but he can’t bring himself to shoot Kevin.
Angel arrives at the butcher shop to ask Felipe where Jimenez is and how to contact him. Felipe breaks down explaining that he couldn’t do it himself and he’s not that man he once was.
Angel admits that he knew that EZ was special and that his mother and father always adored him. He continues to say that EZ doesn’t belong in the M.C. or Santo Padre and that’s why he has to be the one to kill Kevin so EZ can get out.
After Felipe tells Angel the location of Kevin’s house, Angel pulls up to the curb outside. EZ pulls up to the house to find Angels about to walk in.
Angel forces his way through the door holding Kevin at gunpoint as Agent Bowen is already in the house. EZ runs in and shoots down Lawrence Bowen. Angel shoots Kevin in the head.
Lincoln Potter arrives at the house, saying that he knew that Bowen was going to be there with Kevin. Potter explains that he will take care of the vehicles and that no 9-1-1 calls were made reporting gunshots so they should be fine.
He also knows about the club and cartel tunnel systems and suggested they use them to get the bodies to the other side of the border to bury them. As the boys clean up the bodies, Potter starts eating the pie that’s on the table.
At the Galindo house, Miguel speaks with Nestor and remarks that the manner in which he killed the nun with a baseball bat was tasteless and won’t continue to happen in the future now that he is working with Adelita and reorganizing.
Nestor will remain his Head Security but will find someone else to handle the groundwork and advise him.
While Angel and EZ are transporting the two bodies, Angel remarks on how his way of thinking is messed up as EZ as worried about them not being back in time for the party at the clubhouse after just killing two cops.
EZ has taken Coco’s advice when he says to Angel that he can’t keep seeing everything as a mistake and that he needs to start believing this is his life and is supposed to happen.
Dita questions Emily if she knew about her son Cristobal (Dita’s son) to which Emily explains she didn’t know about that conversation until Miguel found out that they lied to him.
Emily throws Dita’s advice that she gave her in her in a previous episode back at her by saying that Dita at that moment made a choice outside of the circle and now she has to feel the consequences of that choice.
We see that Adelita and her rebels are now living in a house, unafraid given their partnership with Galindo. Adelita consoles the little girl known as Mini (also referred to as Mouse) as she struggles with this new change.
While EZ and Angel are burying the bodies, Angel instructs EZ to tell Bishop that he needs to leave the MC when he returns to the clubhouse.
Angel then drives to the house where Adelita and Pablo are staying. As Angel and Adelita to take a walk, Adelita asks Angel if he wants to spend the night, but he refuses due to his conflict over his brother.
EZ meets with Lincoln Potter to show him proof that they buried the bodies. Potter then makes a phone call and speaking in code gives a command as EZ watches his entire record disappear from the computer log.
EZ almost can’t believe it and for a good reason, because as he walks away, Potter says the favor was to remove one problem and not two, and that complicates things. Lincoln Potter remarks that EZ owes him.
At the clubhouse, EZ is helping prepare for the party when Angel emerges as the new Secretary of the M.C. EZ enters the temple and closes the door behind him, requesting an audience with the high ranking Mayan members.
Outside, Felipe asks Angel what happened with Kevin and Angel confirms that it’s over. When Felipe inquires if EZ was the one who did it Angel remarks it was him that did it and his favorite son is free and clear.
The scene cuts to the end of the conversation between EZ and the higher-ranking patch members. Once the men leave, Bishop and Alvarez talk privately.
When the SAMCRO members arrive at the Mayans M.C. clubhouse, Sons of Anarchy member Happy Lowman (David Labrava) is present.
In an emotional scene, Bishop and Alvarez have finished their discussion. Once Bishop leaves, Alvarez removes his kutte and puts it on the back of the chair, stepping down as El Padrino and National President of the Mayans M.C.
Bishop tells Angel they’ll add to their bylaws that “blood can’t sponsor blood.” Bishop reveals that EZ asked Bishop to sponsor him because the family issues between Felipe and Angel was messing with his ability to prospect.
At the Galindo house, Alvarez arrives to see Miguel and Emily. Miguel reveals that Alvarez is going to be Miguel’s new consigliere for the Galindo cartel.
Angel confronts EZ about staying in the M.C. EZ explains that when he was in prison, it was all about him, but now that he’s out he’s been able to make it about Angel and the club. He can’t go back.
Their conversation is interrupted by the SAMCRO prospect asking EZ for more beers when EZ flashes back to the night he killed the cop.
The entire sequence of flashbacks from previous episodes play out with additional details. EZ runs from police and chases the suspect, and he sees his face, revealing that the shooter was Happy Lowman of the Sons of Anarchy Redwood Original charter, marking the end of the episode.
Mayans M.C. has been renewed by FX for a second season, expecting to begin production in May 2019 for a September 2019 premiere.
