Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency premieres tonight on BBC America and follows the exploits of the very eccentric and unusually gifted detective Dirk Gently.
Based on Douglas Adams’ novels, the story involves time travel, assassins, kittens and just about everything else…the key being it is all connected.
The books have been adapted by Max Landis and is a co-production between BBC America and Netflix. Landis says he has stuck to the spirit of the character but the books are not being slavishly followed.
The series stars Samuel Barnett as the self-styled holistic detective and Elijah Wood plays his unintended sidekick Todd.
The cast also features Hannah Marks as Todd’s sister Amanda who has serious genetic disorder, Fiona Dourif as Bart Curlish who is a maniacal and almost invulnerable assassin, Jade Eshete as ass kicking security officer Farah Black and Mpho Koaho as nerdy tech Ken.
Also starring are Michael Eklund as Martin, Miguel Sandoval as Colonel Scott Riggins,Dustin Milligan as Sergeant Hugo Friedkin and Aaron Douglas as Gordon Rimmer.
This premiere episode sees the strange sleuth look into the death of a reclusive millionaire and kidnapping of his daughter. This is where he runs into musician Todd Brotzman who unwittingly ends up as his assistant of sorts and soon realises his life in for a bizarre turn.
Don’t expect a linear plot in this show, you’ll need to stick with it as the dots are slowly connected and the chaos is gradually brought to order by Gently’s mystic talents.
Douglas Adams described the story as a “thumping good detective-ghost-horror-who dunnit-time travel-romantic-musical-comedy-epic” and that pretty much sums it up.
Tune in for Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency – Horizons at 9 PM on BBC America.
