The Street Outlaws teams both beat their Fast N’ Loud rivals in the ultimate TV auto showdown, Discovery’s Mega Race.
In what turned out to be the more serious and competitive of the two events, Big Chief beat Richard Rawlings in a best-of-three drag race — winning the first two races so a third one didn’t have to take place.
The first one actually saw Richard’s Dodge Challenger, driven much to Big Chief’s annoyance by pro driver Alex Laughlin of Laughlin Motorsports, travel the 1/8 mile faster.
But he took longer to get off the line than Big Chief, which meant Big Chief’s 1970 Pontiac GTO crossed the line first.
Big Chief then also won the second race, by a bigger margin, and claimed the only prize that mattered on the day — the win.
Meanwhile, Aaron Kaufman triumphed in his skills challenge against Street Outlaws’ Farmtruck and AZN, thanks to the agility of his 1995 BMW E36 M3 build.
Both of the above were results we predicted. Fans had also predicted Big Chief’s win by a 75% to 25% margin in votes cast online ahead of the race.
They also predicted Aaron’s win in the skills challenge.
But Aaron then lost to the Farmtruck & AZN in his second event – the drag race, which saw him literally drift his car down the track when he failed to get any grip with his tires.
As per the Mega Race rules, that meant the two teams had to have a final tug-of-war contest between their two cars to decide the winner.
Aaron knew right from the get-go that he was going to lose this one, when his car was put up against the weight and power of his rivals’ Pontiac 1976 Firebird Trans Am.
And his gut feeling proved to be true when Farmtruck and AZN’s truck towed Aaron’s BMW backwards with ease right out of the box.
But there was no bad blood between the two teams after Aaron, who has recently revealed more details about what he’s going to be doing post-Gas Monkey Garage, helped his rivals repair their broken car so they could actually take part in the drag race.
And when Farmtruck suggested they both keep their cars, and proposed a possible rematch, Aaron agreed. Here’s hoping!
