The Goldbergs premiered on ABC in 2013 and was an immediate hit.
Set in the ’80s, it played on the love of nostalgia, similar to Netflix’s Stranger Things, but instead of monsters terrorizing a family, this show just had the family terrorize each other with hilarious results.
The sitcom is based loosely on the childhood experience of the show’s creator, Adam F. Goldberg. Since its premiere season, the ratings have climbed and it remains one of the most-watched sitcoms on television.
Season 8 of The Goldbergs also ended with a huge moment. Geoff, who had broken up and got back together with Erica, finally decided it was time to make his move.
Geoff proposed to Erica. Of course, it couldn’t just play out as a proposal, as their family and friends had to almost ruin everything.
However, the good news is that he proposed and it is time to see where that goes next season.
Here is everything we know so far about The Goldbergs Season 9.
This article provides everything that is known about The Goldbergs Season 9 and all related news. As such, this article will be updated over time with news, rumors, and analysis. Meanwhile, let’s dig down into what is known so far.
Is there going to be a Season 9 of The Goldbergs?
Deadline reported in May 2021 that ABC renewed The Goldbergs for Season 9.
This renewal came the same day that ABC announced it was also bringing back Black-ish for its eighth season, which will end that series. ABC also announced renewals for The Conners, The Rookie, A Million Little Things, and Home Economics.
The announcement came just days before The Goldbergs Season 8 finale.
Release date latest: When does The Goldbergs Season 9 come out?
ABC has not announced when The Goldbergs Season 9 will come out, but it should be pretty easy to guess the release date.
The series hit in September every year except for Season 8. The premiere dates ranged between Sept. 21 and Sept. 27 in the first seven seasons.
The only reason Season 8 was different was due to COVID-19 delays. Our prediction is that The Goldbergs Season 9 will premiere either on Sept. 22 or Sept, 29, 2021.
We will update this article when ABC announces the official release date for The Goldbergs Season 9.
The Goldbergs Season 9 cast updates
The main cast of The Goldbergs will be back, with the exception of one character.
Jeff Garlin (Murray Christian Goldberg), Wendi McLendon-Covey (Beverly Goldberg), Sean Giambrone (Adam Frederick Goldberg), Troy Gentile (Barry Norman Goldberg), and Hayley Orrantia (Erica Dorothy Goldberg) will all surely return for Season 9.
Sadly, George Segal, who played Albert “Pops” Salomon died at the age of 87 in March. This means that he will not appear at all, as the new season was not renewed yet at the time of his death.
Segal died due to a result of complications from his bypass surgery. A tribute to the actor played out on the Season 8 episode, Couple Off. The role will not be recast and the character will not return.
There should also be plenty of returning supporting cast members as well.
This includes Sam Lerner (Geoff “Madman” Schwartz), Sadie Stanley (Brea Bee), Kenny Ridwan (Dave Kim), AJ Michalka (Lainey Lewis), Dan Fogler (Marvin Goldberg), Judd Hirsch (Ben “Pop Pop” Goldberg), Jacob Hopkins (Chad Kremp), and Zayne Emory (J. C. Spink).
Also expect plenty of guest stars of real-life ’80s personalities.
Previous seasons included appearances by Anthony Michael Hall, Rick Moranis, Robert Englund, Weird Al Yankovic, Hulk Hogan, and Charlie Sheen.
The Goldbergs Season 9 spoilers
The Goldbergs is a sitcom, so the storylines really just amount to funny episodes with jokes playing at rapid pace. Don’t expect a lot of deep stories to be told in Season 9.
However, here is where the Goldberg family left off.
Geoff and Erica broke up in Season 8, but they got back together by the end. This is going to lead to a big moment in Season 9 because Geoff told his friends that he wants to propose to Erica and ask her to marry him.
He has his friends hold onto the engagement ring and keep it safe. The proposal ends up much more complicated than he expected. There were several miscommunications and misunderstandings involving the family and friends that almost ruined everything.
Thankfully, Adam stepped in to make sure things went right.
It should be fun to see how these characters exist now after the proposal. This could lead to a wedding, and those are always fun in sitcoms.
Other relationships that could play out in Season 9 of The Goldbergs include the one between Adam and Brea, as well as Dave Kim’s romantic life.
It will also be interesting to see how the show deals with Pop’s absence, as he and Adam were very close.
ABC has yet to announce when The Goldbergs Season 9 will premiere.
