Fans are already impatiently looking forward to the return of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel for Season 3 after binge-watching the entire 10-episode Season 2 dropped at once by Amazon last month.
Amazon announced the return of the award-winning series for Season 3 back in May 2018, six months before Season 2 was even released. Thus fans already knew that The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel Season 3 was happening long before watching Season 2.
The early season renewal gave evidence of the faith that Amazon has in Amy Sherman-Palladino, the creator and co-executive producer of the series.
Amazon confirmed the renewal of The Marvelous Mr. Maisel for Season 3 after Sherman-Palladino’s acceptance speech at the 77th Peabody Awards ceremony, which took place on Saturday, May 19, 2018, at Cipriani Wall Street in NYC.
“You’re going to give it to us (season renewal) because we’re bringing home the fancy thing, right?” Sherman-Palladino prodded the Amazon executives, while accepting the award.
Amazon had already signed a contract for 18 episodes of the series spread over two seasons.
However, after Sherman-Palladino’s acceptance speech, Amazon Studios chief Jennifer Salke, who also attended the awards ceremony, confirmed on May 20 that The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel would get a Season 3.
The slew of “fancy awards” certainly gave Amazon a strong incentive to throw their full support behind The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel and Sherman-Palladino.
In addition to her 2018 Peabody Award, Sherman-Palladino also took home Outstanding Comedy Series, Outstanding Directing and Outstanding Writing at the 2018 Primetime Emmy Awards.
The series also won the Best Television Series (Musical/Comedy) at the 2018 Golden Globes.
With fans now assured that The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel will return for Season 3, they want to know the exact date that Season 3 will premiere.
Fans are also wondering who will be in the cast for Season 3, when will the streaming giant drop the official trailer for Season 3, and what to expect of the plot and storyline of the upcoming season.
To answer these questions, we have brought together everything that is known so far about The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel Season 3, including release date, trailers, cast, plot, spoilers and more.
The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel Season 3 release date
Although Amazon has renewed The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel for Season 3, we have no official word yet about when Midge Maisel will return to our TV screens.
However, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel Season 3 is expected to premiere sometime in 2019, according to the show’s IMDb page. But Season 3 production has not yet started.
According to Cosmopolitan, the official press kit for The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel Season 2 reveals that Alex Borstein will start shooting the upcoming season in the spring of 2019.
If the information is accurate, then the premiere date for Season 3 is still several months away, most likely in the winter of 2019.
The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel Season 1 premiered on November 29, 2017, while Season 2 premiered on December 4, 2018.
If the schedule for Season 3 follows the schedules for Seasons 1 and 2, then we can expect the premiere date for The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel Season 3 to come late in 2019, during the holiday season, after Thanksgiving, in late November or early December.
Similarly, Amazon announced the premiere date for Season 2 in October 2018, just over a month before the December 4 premiere date.
Based on that precedent and the expectation that Season 3 will premier in winter 2019, fans can expect that the confirmation of the official premiere date for Season 3 is also still months away.
While fans may not be too excited to wait so long for Midge Maisel to return to their TV screens, it offers the opportunity for new fans to catch up by binge-watching Seasons 1 and 2.
The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel Season 3 details
The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel is a comedy-drama TV series created by Amy Sherman-Palladino, who also co-executive produces the series with her husband Dan Palladino.
Sherman-Palladino is known for having created The WB and The CW hit series Gilmore Girls (TV Series 200-2007) — starring Lauren Graham and Alexis Bledel — which she also executive produced with Daniel Palladino.
The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel is a dramedy set in the 1950s, and stars Rachel Brosnahan as the eponymous Miriam “Midge” Maisel, a Jewish Upper West Side housewife who discovers her flair for stand-up comedy after her marriage falls apart.
Creator Sherman-Palladino told The Hollywood Reporter that The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel was inspired by her early memories of her father, who was also a stand-up comedian based in New York. Other sources of inspiration, according to Sherman-Palladino, were female comediennes, such as Joan Rivers and Totie Fields.
The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel pilot episode aired in March 2017. It received positive reviews and a warm audience response, and has since become one of the most beloved shows on Amazon.
The series has a 93% approval rating, based on 78 reviews, on Rotten Tomatoes, and a “generally favorable” Metascore of 80/100, based on 27 critics on Metacritic.
On April 10, 2017, Amazon placed an order for the first two seasons of the series, consisting of a total of 18 episodes (including the pilot). The eight-episode Season 1 premiered officially on November 29, 2017, after the pilot episode aired much earlier on March 17.
Amazon renewed the series for a 10-episode Season 3 on May 20, 2018, more than six months before the 10-episode Season 2 premiered on December 4.
Sherman-Palladino and her husband Dan have since assured fans that they have more seasons planned out for the beloved TV series. After she won the Golden Globes in January 2018, she assured fans that she was “never leaving” Amazon.
“I think we know what our trajectory is for the first four to five seasons,” she said in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter. “And then I just want to see if I’m still breathing at that point. If I am, then we’ll continue.”
With the rave reviews, strong audience approval and accolades the show has won, fans can be confident that they will see more seasons of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel beyond the third.
Meanwhile, it is expected that The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel Season 3 will go into production in the spring of 2019. Season 2 of the series also went into production in spring 2018.
The show has so far won eight Emmys, including Outstanding Comedy Series, Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series, Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series, and Outstanding Directing for a Comedy Series.
Rachel Brosnahan won Outstanding Lead Actress, while Alex Borstein won Outstanding Supporting Actress at the 2018 Primetime Emmy Awards. Creator Sherman-Palladino won Outstanding Directing and Outstanding writing the same year.
Brosnahan also won Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series (Musical/Comedy) at the 2018 and 2019 Golden Globes, while Palladino took home the Best Television Series (Musical/Comedy) in 2018.

Luke Kirby is expected to return as Lenny Bruce, Tony Shalhoub as Abe Weissman, Alex Borstein as Susie Myerson, and Marin Hinkle as Rose Weissman .
While it is possible that Zachary Levi will return as Dr. Benjamin Ettenberg, we are still awaiting official confirmation.
Doubts that Levi would return after Season 2 arose after he told The Hollywood Reporter in December that he did not know whether he would be back for Season 3.
“If there’s an opportunity to come back and wrap that storyline up, I would love to,” he said. “But a lot of stories can be told just in dialogue from other characters.”
What new characters can fans expect in Season 3?
The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel Season 3 could feature other real-life artists or comedians after Lenny Bruce appeared in Season 2 alongside fictional characters, such as Declan Howell (Rufus Sewell).
Marvelous Mrs. Maisel fans on Reddit have voiced hope that Season 3 will feature another famous comedian, such as George Carlin or Richard Pryor.
It is widely claimed that Carlin and Bruce had met in the 1960s and that Bruce influenced Carlin. It is also claimed that the two were arrested together at a comedy club in Chicago in December 1962.
However, Carlin featuring in Season 3 is merely fan speculation.
The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel Season 3 plot
The Marvelous Mrs. Masiel introduces a young upper middle-class Upper Westside housewife of Jewish heritage who has been married to her husband Joel for four years. Joel works at the Tri-Borough Plastics but moonlights as a comedian at The Gaslight Cafe.
Season 1 story
Joel leaves Midge for his secretary. The distraught Midge gets drunk and delivers an impromptu performance at The Gaslight Cafe. She gets arrested for bawdy behavior.
At the police station, she meets the comedian Lenny Bruce who was also arrested for improper behavior during his act. After she gets bailed out, she also bails Bruce out of jail.
Midge decides to become a comedienne, and Susie Myerson, who works at The Gaslight Cafe, becomes her manager.
Midge leaves her husband Joel and moves in with her parents Rose and Abe. She gets a job at B. Altman and moonlights as a comedienne, visiting clubs across New York. She meets the comedienne Sophie Lennon.
Midge crosses Sophie by uncovering the flashy socialite personality behind Sophie’s modest stage persona.
Sophie tries to get Midge blacklisted from New York clubs but she is able to secure gigs with help from Susie and Lenny. She adopts the stage name Mrs. Maisel and proves her talent.
Season 2 story
In The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel Season 2, Midge continues to make progress in her career. She goes on vacation with her family at the Catskills where she meets Benjamin Ettenberg, a New York doctor.
The two start dating.
After the vacation, Midge continues to pursue her interest in stand-up comedy and Susie gets her a spot on a show. She learns that her enemy Sophie is in charge of the show and meets the famous singer Shy Baldwin.
Sophie tries to sabotage Midge by placing her in the late-night slot, but Midge still manages to attract attention.
Soon after, Benjamin proposes to Midge and she is ready to accept the proposal.
Meanwhile, Baldwin is impressed with her performance and asks her to join him as his opening act on his six-month tour across the U.S. and Europe. Midge is unable to resist the offer despite the fact that she and Benjamin are about to get engaged.
Sophie asks Susie to be her manager and it seems likely that Susie will accept the offer at a time of growing rift with Midge.
In the closing scene of the Season 2 finale, we see Midge back in Joel’s arms, lamenting that her decision to put her career over her personal life could mean that she ends up all alone for the rest of her life.
“I’m going to be all alone for the rest of my life,” she tells Joel in the ending scene.
Midge fears that her full-time stand-up comedian career could adversely affect her personal life.
Abe considers leaving Bell Labs and Columbia University.
What to expect from Season 3
The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel Season 3 will follow what happens after Midge decides to embark on a six-month tour with singer Shy Baldwin and reveal how taking up a full-time career affects her personal life.
Her fear of loneliness could be a reflection of the circumstances of her life’s setting in the 1950s when it was comparatively rare for women to work outside home.
Her decision to take up a demanding professional career means that she might not be able to fulfill her expected roles as a housewife and mother.
It would certainly mean that she would see even less of her children, Ethan and Esther.
However, Zachary Levi’s Dr. Ben Ettenberg appeared to have been supportive of her career, thus many fans wondered why she thought she had to choose between him and her career.
But making a decision to go off on a six-month trip so soon after Benjamin proposed and they almost got engaged could put a strain on their relationship.
The end scene where she is shown with Joel has also led many fans to wonder whether she will get back together with her ex-husband. But it seems unlikely that the two will reconcile.
They’ve had an on-again, off-again relationship since Season 1, when they first separated. It seems more likely that the Season 2 finale end scene was only another “just for tonight” session that could even turn out to be their last.
Regardless of what happens in her personal life, fans can expect that in The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel Season 3, Midge will experience major progress in her professional life as a stand-up comedienne.
Fans can expect that The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel Season 3 will resolve key questions, such as whether Midge and Benjamin will stay together and get married or whether Midge and Joel will get back together.
We shall see how Ethan and Esther react to the news that Midge is going away for six months.
We will also learn whether Susie becomes Sophie’s manager and whether Abe resigns from Columbia.
Some members of the cast of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel Season 3 shared with Town & Country what they hoped for their respective characters in Season 3.
Brosnahan said she would like to see Midge make a firm commitment to pursue her career as a stand-up comedienne. Brosnahan’s comment is a strong indication of what is next for Midge in Season 3.
Marin Hinkle, who plays Rose Weissman, also said she hopes Rose will be able to follow her life ambition and dreams.
On January 7, 2019, members of the cast of The Marvelous Mrs. Masiel, including Shalhoub, Hinkle and Zegen, teased what to expect from Season 3 during an interview with Us Weekly at the 2019 Golden Globes.
According to the series stars, Season 3 will bring major changes for the main characters.
“There’s a big change going on for this character and the ramifications of that will be large changes for Rose, too,” Shalhoub, who plays Abe, said.
Zegen, who plays Joel Maisel, also shared his thoughts on whether Joel and Midge will get back together. His comments suggested that fans should not expect Joel and Midge to get back together again.
“I think she just wanted to be with somebody she knew really well before she embarked on this solo career,” he said.
Season 3 spoilers
In a December interview with TVLine, show creator Sherman-Palladino was clear about what fans can expect of Midge’s life in Season 3.
“Quite frankly, the story was not about her and Ben,” she said.
“The story was about Midge’s raw, ruthless ambition. It’s another awakening in her. Because without that cutthroat aspect, there’s no way she could make it in the comedy world.”
“[By deciding to tour with Shy], she picked a path that is exciting and ambitious,” Sherman-Palladino continued.
“She will travel, she’ll f–k great men, she’ll have ups and downs and make money and lose money. At the end of the day, that will seem like a more exciting life, but it may not be the life that will make her as happy and safe and protected as the other life.”
When asked to confirm in plain words that Midge will be going on tour in Season 3, and leaving Ben behind, she said, “It sure looks like she’s going. We bought luggage!”
She also appeared to confirm that fans might have seen the last of Ben.
“[The season] all led to that moment when she said ‘Yes’ [to touring for six months with Shy], without a thought of the fact that she has just thrown everything else away,” Sherman-Palladino said. “To do that, you can’t really have a [Midge-Benjamin] breakup scene.”
