The Winds of Winter is the long-awaited sixth installment to the A Song of Ice and Fire series by George R. R. Martin.
The author has given fans an update on the release date for the Winds of Winter after the Game of Thrones Season 8 teaser trailer.
Game of Thrones co-showrunner David Benioff previously revealed that some elements of Winds of Winter will be in the HBO series but also noted that it will diverge from the book in many respects.
When is The Winds of Winter being released?
Author George R. R. Martin has missed several deadlines for the book dating back to 2015 but gave fans an update in his blog titled: Not a Blog.
In the blog post, Martin celebrated the success of his book Fire & Blood, which is about the history of House Targaryen — 300 years before the events of Game of Thrones.
Aquaman is attacking me… or is it Khal Drogo? Either way I'm strangely OK with it. pic.twitter.com/FjYNck3zaq

Martin confirms that he is back to writing the novel and teases the release date with the following: “It won’t be tomorrow, and it won’t be next week, but you will get the end of A SONG OF ICE AND FIRE.”
The author suggested that Game of Thrones Season 8 may be released before Winds of Winter and talks about a GOT spin-off show, which is currently being cast with the working titled The Long Night.
It is unclear how much of Winds of Winter the author has left to write. Martin confirmed earlier this year that fans will not get the book in 2018. With Game of Thrones coming to an end with six episodes in 2019, fans should expect the final book sometime after the finale of GOT airs on HBO.
